Empty Bowls
From Kol Neshama’s “A Light for Greytowers”
Music and lyrics by Levi Garbose.
Sung by the Orphans
Empty bowls in the morning
Are not a pleasant sight.
It’s one you don’t get used to
And it haunts you through the night.
The only hope that we may have
Of eating any food,
Depends upon Miss Grimshaw
And what might be her mood…
We know that being orphaned
Makes us needy and obliged,
But nonetheless- it’s quite a test
When your stomach screams inside!
Why are we so empty?
Why are we so weak?
Why is it we’re always feeling down?
Why are we created –
To be so second-rated?
Why is it we always wear a frown?
Could it be that we were born to suffer?!
Could it be that we were born to lose?!
We completely disagree
With everything we see –
Yet nothing ever changes
With our reality!
Empty bowls in the morning
Are not a pleasant sight.
It’s one you don’t get used to
And it haunts you through the night.
The only hope that we may have
Of eating any food,
Depends upon Miss Grimshaw
And…
